“The Beginning” is how Lisa McDonald ends her book, a technique that caught my thoughts by surprise and made the lessons of her story echo in my head. Little Boy Gan from Passion-Filled Everland is a creative collaboration of indelible imagery along with a timeless storyline, making for a delightful literary addition to any personal collection or library.

Perfect for reading to a child before bed or to take a few moments throughout the day, McDonald uses the timeless power of gratitude to increase awareness of the moment and emphasize the smallest things in life that count indicates the greatest pleasure.

In the enchanted forest of Everland there is a cast including a talking willow, a caterpillar, a deer, a frog, a goose, a turtle and a squirrel who all ask Gan the same question: "What makes you beam with happiness?" attracted from Goose's glory of being, the characters each learn a lesson that comes from Goose's peace, love, and gratitude. Goose's momentum in his gait adds to his happy thoughts; his kind words come from being comfortable in his own skin; his humble calm allows him to listen to the universe. These are all very important Zen techniques of self-realization, and by reading this book children can develop these skills by observing the lessons Gan tells his imaginative friends.

One can't help but slow down and imagine how peaceful Everland is as the visuals cast an angelic look at the characters' interactions. The illustrative viewpoints whimsically float around in perspective and zoom in close with very creative artistry. Gan is humble and clear in his answers to questions about why he is so happy. These answers are found in everyone; only that in Goose's case he understands "why" at such a young age, showing other youngsters that wisdom is attainable at any age if given time for silent meditation. We learn to appreciate the blessings we create "here and now".

Which this book is part of a series of other children's books by Lisa McDonald. With "Little Boy Gan" she has created a piece that stands on its own and represents completeness, yet still fits into her message from other works like a jigsaw puzzle for young minds to grasp life's lessons. It is a spiritual book, although it makes no mention of God, a philosophical book without citing Eastern prophets, and a classic visual in soft but detailed illustrations.

In the competitive children's book market, Lisa McDonald has established herself as a visionary author, able to combine illustrations with succinct but powerful messages, poetically using phrases and dialogue to deliver lessons of confidence and wisdom to young children to mediate.
