The Pride of Portugal - Portuguese Horses

Horseback riding is a pastime for the wealthy and elite group of people who can afford such hobbies. The sporting activity of riding wild is an offshoot of the interest in riding. Many countries have developed horseback riding to attract those interested in horseback riding. Portugal also boasts some of the best riders in the sport and has some fine horse breeds too.

In the past, people did not use a car or vehicle for transportation like we do today. Their means of locomotion was based primarily on animals and horses and was always considered the first choice. Horses were used extensively during warfare as they provide excellent support to the rider. They were also used to transport cargo from one place to another. However, with the modern advances in technology, horses are now mainly seen as a luxury hobby to satisfy the adventurous spirit of many.

Portugal horses are known around the world for their best breeds. Lusitano, Sorraia and Garrano are the three types of popular breeds. Lusitano horses were formerly used in military camps and continued to be used in bullfighting and dressage. Horses are generally considered good-looking. These are domesticated in horse farms and put to various uses. They are also able to improve dressage levels. The Sorraia type comes from the Iberian Peninsula, known for its primitive features. It assigns a convex profile with dull coloring. Sorraias are actually not ponies, but horses. Although people often confuse this breed with Garrano, which again is a completely different type of horse breed. Only 200 Sorraias are believed to exist today, and most of them are said to be privately owned. Garrano, a well-known horse breed, are believed to be the ancestors of the Galician pony. The infusion of Arabian blood in Garrano has refined this breed and lost its primitive characteristics. They are naturally very strong and can traverse challenging and steep terrain with ease.
